My story

I was born in Sydney and moved to Guangzhou with my parents when I was four. That is where I learned to swim. I came back to Sydney at eleven, finished school at Knox Grammar, and studied Design and Architecture at the University of Sydney.

I only took swimming seriously at university. My first international medal was gold in the 50m butterfly at the 2019 World University Games in Naples. Then I missed the Tokyo team, took time away in Hong Kong, and nearly walked away from the sport.

I came back in 2022 and everything clicked. Alongside Kyle Chalmers I won relay gold and silver at the World Championships in Budapest, then two relay golds at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where I also made the 100m freestyle final.

In 2023 a tumour in my spinal canal stopped me walking properly. Surgery removed it, and I did not train seriously again until January 2024. Six months later I beat Kyle in the 100m freestyle at the NSW Championships, swam a personal best 48.08 at trials, and was named to my first Olympic team. In Paris I swam the heats of the 4×100m freestyle relay that won silver, and reached the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle.

That year changed how I think about performance. Getting faster is rarely about training harder. It is about finding the two or three things that are actually costing you time, and fixing those. That is what I do now as a coach.

NEWPB

In between, I built NEWPB, a swimming equipment company in Sydney. It started with a racing cap I wanted for myself. Today it is worn by Cameron McEvoy and Olympians from four countries, and supplies club kit to swim clubs, schools and national programs across Australia.
